In partnership with county registers of deeds offices, local health departments, and birthing facilities throughout the state, we are responsible for recording North Carolina vital events. NC.gov » Vital Records Vital Records Obtain birth, death, marriage and divorce certificates, and register name changes. Certificates can be obtained in person, by mail, by phone or online. North Carolina is a unique state in that its birth, marriage, and death records are essentially public records as soon as created. North Carolina does not restrict access to genealogical copies with 25 year or greater embargo periods that limit public access. This means you won’t have to battle to access vital records.

The NC Vital Records office is responsible for recording North Carolina vital events: births, deaths, fetal deaths, marriages, and divorces which occur in North Carolina. The office codes these events for statistical purposes maintains the records and provides certified or uncertified copies to individuals, researchers, and public health programs.

North Carolina Birth Index, 1800-2000 – Includes Delayed Birth registrations extending back into 18th century; these require documentary proof of birthdate or age, birthplace, and parentage from other records and must identify contemporary owner of family Bible if presented for proof. Durham, Wake, Forsyth, and Dare counties are not covered.

About Birth Records in North Carolina Birth records are managed by the North Carolina Vital Records Unit, which is a division of the Department of Health and Human Services. Birth records are available from 1913 to present.

Birth Records Outside of North Carolina Born Inside the United States: Birth certificates are maintained by each state for the people who are born in that state. If a person was not born in North Carolina, contact the state vital records office in the state where they were born to get a copy of the birth certificate.

Original copies of birth and death certificates can be obtained from Department of Environmental, Health and Natural Resources, Vital Records Section, P.O. Box 29537, Raleigh, North Carolina 27626. The register of deeds in the county where the birth was filed also may be able to provide a copy of the birth certificate.
